The Artists

J.J. Wright

J.J. Wright's style cannot be easily categorized. Trained as a jazz improvisor at the New School for Jazz in NYC, he's also passionate about sacred music. Palestrina and Bach vie with Monk and Cannonball Adderly are just a few of his harmonic and melodic inspirations. While with the US Naval Academy Band, Wright performed for the President—along with several other high-profile diplomatic gigs—and the Caribbean Jazz Project: Afro Bop Alliance, recording with vibraphonist and Latin Grammy award-winner Dave Samuels.

When he's not busy pursuing a Master's of Sacred Music degree at Notre Dame or studying conducting with Carmen Helena-Tellez, he's a husband and father to two beautiful children.

Nick Sednew

Nick Sednew is a Chicago-based professional trumpet performer and brass educator. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the renowned Indiana University School of Music. He has performed with David Baker’s Jazz ensemble, the Disney All-Star College Band, Sam Rivers’ Orchestra, Chicago Afrobeat Project, and was lead trumpet on the Queen Mary II. Recently, he played in the pit orchestra for the Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, featuring Chaim Topol. In 2008, Nick was invited to the Steans Institute for Young Jazz Artists at Ravinia, where he had the opportunity to play and compose original music under the direction of David Baker, James Moody, Nathan Davis and Rufus Reid. Since moving to Chicago he has established himself as an active member of the vibrant music scene. He performs regularly with some of the city's finest musicians, navigating a broad variety of styles and genres.

Matt Ulery

Matt Ulery is a Chicago based bassist and composer performing since the age of 14 years. Ulery’s music is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, and folk– specifically American, South American, Balkan, and other European folk styles. He performs not only on upright and electric bass, but doubles on tuba.

Ulery is the leader of his own group, Loom, and a member, among others, of Eastern Blok, and the Grazyna Auguscik Group. Ulery has released 5 albums of all original music under his name including his most recent release of a double album on Dave Douglas’s Greenleaf Music record label in June 2012.

While currently working on a Master in Music degree at Depaul University, Ulery earned his bachelors degree in music composition at The Chicago College of Performing at Roosevelt University and has played in bands with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Phil Markowitz, Jarek Bester, Fareed Haque, Howard Levy, Patricia Barber, Ron Perrillo, Goran Ivanovic, Jeff Parker, Zach Brock, and many others.

When not touring parts of the U.S. and Europe with his groups, Matt appears regularly in the Chicago area music venues and has played performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Chicago Orchestra Hall, Millennium Park Pritzker Pavillion, and countless other fine music listening rooms.

Jon Deitemyer

Jon Deitemyer has quickly earned his place among a new breed of creative, expressive jazz drummers. Grammy-winning singer Patricia Barber raves: “Jon Deitemyer is the drummer everybody wants right now…” and Chicagojazz.com says: “Jon Deitemyer has earned a reputation as a must-hear drummer and doesn't disappoint.”

He graduated summa cum laude from the esteemed University of North Texas and spent substantial time at the Banff Centre for the Arts. In only a short professional career, Jon has performed and recorded with Patricia Barber, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Matt Ulery’s Loom, Grazyna Auguscik, Zach Brock, Ben Paterson, and countless others. Jon released his debut album “Collected Shorts” in 2010. In addition, Jon’s role in music education has grown rapidly: he has earned an Illinois Arts Council grant for education through the Plato School and is currently a faculty member of both DePaul University’s Community Music program and the Chicago Academy for the Arts. He is also a Participant of the 2004 Banff International Jazz Workshop; studies with Dave Douglas, Clarence Penn, Jason Moran, Bill Frisell, et al.
