For 20 years there has been a Latin orchestra playing Afro-Cuban and Latin dance music in South Bend. The first was Tiempo Latino, formed mostly by student musicians from Notre Dame in about 1990. It was followed by Sabor Latino in the mid-90s, a popular student group that recorded two cds. In the late 90s the orchestra became known as Son de Aqui when a group of local musicians inherited it. Then in 2003 the group expanded and became Conjunto Caribe, opening that summer for the great Cuban-born trumpet player Arturo Sandoval. In 2006 the group expanded to 12 musicians after adding singers and a larger horn section.
The musicians from Mambo Azul met while playing with Conjunto Caribe, a salsa and merengue orchestra formed in 2003 to open for Arturo Sandoval's performance at the Firefly Festival. They're now playing many different kinds of Latin music: Brazilian bossa nova, Afro-Cuban bolero, salsa and cha-cha-cha, Latin jazz standards and jazz standards in a Latin style. |
